Best Suburbs Near Akron, Ohio

Somebody says Akron and you picture the city. Then you start looking at houses and notice how many separate towns ring it, each with its own school district, its own price range, and its own kind of house.
So let's talk about the best suburbs near Akron, Ohio. There is no single winner, so what follows is a tour of the towns around the city and what the houses in each one actually are.
This article is general educational information and is not legal, tax, or financial advice. School district boundaries, taxes, and zoning apply to a specific address, so confirm them for any property before you buy.

The short answer
There is no one best suburb near Akron, and a ranked list mostly tells you about whoever wrote it. What there is: a ring of towns, nearly all in Summit County, each with a different mix of houses and a different school district.
Right beside Akron sit Cuyahoga Falls, Stow, Tallmadge, Munroe Falls, and the village of Silver Lake. West are Fairlawn and Bath. South are Green, Portage Lakes, Barberton, and Norton. North is Hudson, with Macedonia and Twinsburg farther up. None of them is far: from Cuyahoga Falls, Akron is about ten minutes, Cleveland about 35, and Canton about 30.
Three questions cut that list down faster than a Saturday of touring. What does your budget buy, since these towns are not priced alike. Which school district do you want, which is a question about an address rather than a city line. And what kind of house are you after, since a street of 1950s Cape Cods and a new construction allotment are in different towns.
First-time buyers tell us the same thing at the start: "I don't know what I don't know." Our Akron neighborhoods guide covers the city itself, and buying a home lays out the path from the first conversation to the keys.
Which suburbs sit right next to Akron?
Cuyahoga Falls
Our hometown, about ten minutes from Akron. Cuyahoga Falls has century homes near Front Street, whole streets of Cape Cods that builder Heslop put up in the 1950s and 60s with some having no basement at all, plus ranches, colonials, split levels, and condos. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is right up against the city. Two districts serve it: Cuyahoga Falls City Schools, and Woodridge Local on the Northampton side.
Stow
A city of about 34,500 next door to Cuyahoga Falls, Munroe Falls, Silver Lake, and Hudson. Stow is colonials, ranches, and split levels, with 11 city parks including the 280 acre Silver Springs Park, which has a lake and a dog beach. Shopping runs along Kent Road, and the district is Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools. Is Stow, Ohio a Good Place to Live? goes deeper.
Tallmadge
A city of about 18,400 just east of Akron, founded in 1807 and the second oldest in Summit County after Hudson. Tallmadge has colonials, split levels, ranches, and century homes, plus small allotments of newer building, at prices generally similar to Cuyahoga Falls. The Tallmadge Circle surrounds a park of nearly five acres holding some of the oldest buildings in the county. The district is Tallmadge City Schools.
Munroe Falls
A town of about 5,000 with the Cuyahoga River through the middle of it. Munroe Falls is colonials, split levels, and ranches, with Brust Park on a former dam site and Munroe Falls Metro Park nearby. It shares the Stow-Munroe Falls district with Stow.
Silver Lake
A village of about a square mile and a half between Cuyahoga Falls and Stow, with two lakes inside it. Silver Lake is colonials and ranches, some right on the water, plus the historic Silver Lake Country Club, in the Cuyahoga Falls City School District. Few homes come up at a time, so this is the one where being ready early decides it.
What is west of Akron?
Fairlawn
A small city of about 7,700 on Akron's west side, and where our office sits, at 3040 West Market Street. Fairlawn has big stately homes along with colonials, split levels, ranches, and century homes, so a search can look very different street to street. Summit Mall is on West Market with more than 100 shops, and Fort Island Park holds the Fairlawn Nature Center. The district is Copley-Fairlawn City Schools, shared with Copley.
Bath
Bath Township has about 10,000 residents across roughly 22 square miles and has been its own community since 1818. Bath is colonials, ranches, century homes, wooded lots, and beautiful estates, with Top-O-Hill known for its enormous estate homes, and homes here generally sell for more than in Cuyahoga Falls or Fairlawn. The 411 acre Bath Nature Preserve and Hale Farm and Village are both here. Most of Bath is Revere Local, part is Copley-Fairlawn, and our sister Abby lives here.
What is south of Akron?
Green
A city of about 27,500 in southeastern Summit County, halfway between Akron and Canton. Green has new construction allotments sprinkled throughout, homes on larger lots outside them, and a mix of ranches, colonials, century homes, and split levels. It is the first place we look when somebody wants a newer home. Boettler Park covers 82 acres, Southgate Park has more than five miles of trails, and the Akron-Canton Airport sits on Green's southeast corner. The district is Green Local Schools.
Portage Lakes
A chain of lakes just south of Akron, spanning parts of New Franklin, Coventry Township, and Green. Portage Lakes homes are lake cottages, year-round homes, big lake houses, and a lot of older homes. Some sit right on the water with docks and others have access without being on it, and those rights vary property to property, so we confirm what comes with a home before an offer goes in. The district depends on the address.
Barberton
About 25,000 people in southwestern Summit County, founded in 1891 by O.C. Barber. Barberton has colonials, ranches, and century homes, generally more affordable than Cuyahoga Falls, which is why it comes up so often for a first purchase. Lake Anna sits in the center of the city, and the chicken houses have served Barberton chicken since the 1930s. The district is Barberton City Schools.
Norton
About 11,700 people next to Barberton. Norton is colonials and ranches on lots that tend to be bigger than in many nearby towns, so it is the one to look at for a yard with real space. The city runs nine parks, and the district is Norton City Schools. Keep going south past Green and you reach North Canton, in Stark County, generally more affordable than Cuyahoga Falls.
What is north of Akron?
Hudson has century homes near a classic downtown square, with First and Main, the Clock Tower, and a 70 acre historic district. It is the oldest city in Summit County and runs at a higher price point than Cuyahoga Falls. The public district is Hudson City Schools, and Western Reserve Academy, a private school for grades 9 through 12, is in town. Is Hudson, Ohio a Good Place to Live? covers it in full.
Macedonia and Twinsburg sit north of Hudson, closer to Cleveland than to Akron, and we work in both.
How do you narrow the list before you tour?
Get your real number first
Pre-approval turns a list of towns into a list of houses, because it tells you which of these places your budget reaches. How Much House Can You Afford in Summit County, Ohio? covers the math, and our first-time buyer page walks through the step.
Use Cuyahoga Falls as the yardstick
Nearly every price comparison around here runs through Cuyahoga Falls, because it sits in the middle. Akron, Barberton, and North Canton are generally more affordable than the Falls, Tallmadge is generally similar, and Bath and Hudson generally run higher. That alone rules towns in or out quickly.
Check the district at the address, not the city line
School district lines do not always follow city or township lines here. Cuyahoga Falls has two districts inside it, Bath has two, and Portage Lakes has several. We check the district for any home you are considering.
Drive it at the hour you would really drive it
A Saturday afternoon tells you almost nothing about a Tuesday morning. Do the commute on a weekday before you decide a town works.

Common mistakes buyers make choosing a suburb near Akron
Picking a town instead of comparing two houses
Every one of these towns has streets you would love and streets you would pass on. The useful comparison is between two specific homes with two specific price tags.
Trusting the mailing address
An Akron mailing address can mean Bath, or Portage Lakes, or Akron. Ask which city or township a home is actually in, because that is what sets the taxes and the services. Fairlawn Heights is a neighborhood inside Akron, not the city of Fairlawn next door.
Shopping one town at a time
Searching three of these towns at once usually finds the right house sooner than searching one well. Biggest Mistakes Buyers Make in Summit County, Ohio covers the others.
Why local guidance matters around Akron
Pace is the local fact that matters most when you are shopping four towns at once. In October 2026, single family homes across Summit County sold at a median price of $236,000, in a median of 21 days, at 100% of list price. In Cuyahoga Falls the median that month was $245,000 in 20 days. Market conditions can change, and pricing or timing will depend on the specific property, location, and goals.
Neither of those is a number for any one suburb, and a county median holds Barberton and Hudson inside the same figure. What they do tell you is that homes here sell in weeks, so pre-approval and search alerts belong in place first.
